MTV Unplugged

Posted by liljim Apr. 21, 2009 @ 10:36 PM EDT

Is anyone, other than me, disappointed that there haven't been more MTV unplugged releases on CD/MP3?

For those of you who were born after all of this happened, in the early nineties, there were a series of sessions:-

Nirvana, Eric Clapton, Pearl Jam, Neil Young, REM, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.

Pearl Jam recently re-released "Ten", a re-mastered version of their album, which includes a DVD of their MTV unplugged session - but still no CD to listen to.

Once Kurt Cobain had died (perhaps even before that), the sessions from Nirvana unplugged were immediately released to CD. Clapton's unplugged session was also released.

I'm wondering what's stopping the rest (other than the record companies who own their asses) from releasing the other material that was produced in these shows.

With the digital age as it is, times are harder for the record industry more than they ever were when it comes to them making some money, so it seems to me like a good time to release these recordings in formats that we can listen to.

I maybe alone, but anyone with me? Also... I miss the unplugged stuff. I wish MTV would bring that back, or some other show would take up where they left off. Jools Holland's show would be a good start.

1st to comment yes!
Anyways, yeah a lot of these artists are pretty good and I miss the unplugged stuff as well. I'm sure it will make a comeback eventually we just have to wait and see.

I am not a big fan of live acoustic music. I hate the mouse sound that accompanies the music. I never was interested in the artists lives or feelings either. I don't miss the show, and I hope it doesn't return ( or any facsimile of it ). I do want you to be happy, so I will try my hardest to scour the web and download any episodes I can find. I will then create a compilation and upload to rapidshare for you.

"mouse sound"?

Apr. 21, 2009 | 11:00 PM KurtWilder2027 says:

Idk about that...
I am not into grunge. I mainly like Metal and Hard Rock from the 70's and 80's.
Some new age metal is ok. Like Dethklok...

Apr. 21, 2009 | 11:43 PM liljim responds:

I don't think anyone could categorise Clapton as being "Grunge." Or REM, or Neil Young, for that matter.

Apr. 21, 2009 | 11:01 PM Phobotech says:

...Don't forget Alice In Chains...

...And yes, I'm disappointed too. Frankly, I'm disappointed MTV has almost nothing to do with music anymore, and even LESS to do with good music nowadays.

I also miss "The Maxx" and other animated oddities...*sigh*...

Apr. 22, 2009 | 11:18 AM liljim responds:

I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting as well.. I had to edit the post to include REM, as they had escaped my notice to start with, too.

Apr. 21, 2009 | 11:48 PM FGIJonC says:

Maybe MTV has gotten so far into a shit hole as far as music is concerned, they forgot all about that. Because you know, afterall, MTV isn't about music anymore, they're moreso about the reality television.

Maybe they should have reality television unplugged. =|

Apr. 22, 2009 | 12:09 AM KurtWilder2027 says:

Right, my bad...
I just saw Nirvana and Stone Temple Pilots...

Apr. 22, 2009 | 12:50 AM BiffTheTimid says:

I really dug the Unplugged series. Back when MTV2 was new, they would play those a lot. MTV as a channel was once on the cutting edge of music and entertainment, but has since declined into reality tv bullshit. They need to switch their name to ETV, since I'm pretty sure they don't play a single music video at any time during the day ever. Neither does MTV2. :*(

Apr. 22, 2009 | 1:15 AM darknessdweller says:

Yea, I wasn't around before 1994.

Sorry.

Apr. 22, 2009 | 11:17 AM liljim responds:

I wasn't around during the Beatles or Elvis' hay days. Doesn't stop me listening to them.

Apr. 22, 2009 | 1:38 AM BoMToons says:

Yeah, unplugged was one of the best things MTV ever did. I would really like to get my hands on those tracks.

I also think NG is the new "Liquid Television"

I can see it now... Slipknot: Unplugged!

Apr. 22, 2009 | 11:15 AM liljim responds:

As ridiculous as that might seem to you, the acts that turned out to be the most entertaining tended to be those you'd least expect to perform acoustically.

Apr. 22, 2009 | 11:13 AM Daniel-M says:

Korn released one a few years ago

Apr. 22, 2009 | 11:29 AM Rucklo says:

take a second look at the list of bands you mention that had unplugged releases...

They all go in the sign of grunge, well, more or less at least, and like you know grunge had it's head blown off with Curt Kobain...

But I agree that they should release more unplugged, today the technology is both alot cheaper and more advanced, point is that they could do so much more with the products today than just make a CD, even. Also, it'd be a step in the right direction for the godforsaken channel to GET BACK into MUSIC. Ugh, MTV nowadays is such a terrible channel... it's all reality shows. bullcrap, i say.

Apr. 23, 2009 | 7:18 PM liljim responds:

I actually posted 6 entries... 3 of which were grunge. There were a ton more that included grunge stuff, but I never saw. Annie Lennox, I believe, made an appearance. There's a full list on wikipedia somewhere. If you look through that, you'll see that most of the acts aren't grunge related.

Apr. 22, 2009 | 12:34 PM Sterance says:

i think britney spears and other bands/singers around her time helped dismantle MTV as a channel about music. now its a channel about pop culture.

I couldn't agree with you more! I loved the MTV Unplugged series back in the day. It was an opportunity to really hear some raw and amazing versions of an artist's music. I wish Pearl Jam would have released theirs on a CD because the Nirvana one was just amazing. I really wish to hear the REM and Neil Young songs again. Hell, even the Rod Stewart one was pretty entertaining. They need to bring the show back all together, but I guess we can only hope that they will at least release the CDs. Besides, MTV isn't about the music anymore...

Apr. 22, 2009 | 5:20 PM valval26 says:

Wow I can imagine what happened if Metallica would do an MTV Unplugged.........

Apr. 23, 2009 | 7:22 PM liljim responds:

Again, not difficult to imagine how that would turn, particularly with songs like "Unforgiven."

Apr. 22, 2009 | 5:54 PM igott says:

MTV sucks anyway.

Apr. 23, 2009 | 7:24 PM liljim responds:

Thank you for that maelstrom of information.

Apr. 22, 2009 | 8:10 PM simon says:

I miss the Pearl Jam sessions so much, they're probably one of my favourite bands from the nineties when my dad used to make me listen to them with him.

I'm with you all the way on this, would be nice to see.

Apr. 22, 2009 | 9:18 PM wthisausername says:

the thing about mtv unplugged is that some of the bands werent unplugged, like nirvana wasnt unplugged at all

Apr. 23, 2009 | 7:21 PM liljim responds:

They were all mainly using acoustic instruments. The fact that those instruments were plugged into amplifiers is inconsequential, given that that's a) so the audience can hear them and b) (more importantly) so that they could mic up/direct input the instruments to recording equipment, so that they could be broadcasted over TV or over other media.

Apr. 23, 2009 | 4:50 PM mongoid says:

Here's my theory: The majority of bands nowadays rely so much on recording studio "magic" that if their fans actually listened to a live performance like MTV Unplugged it would show how incapable they are of playing a coherent song without a mix-track and a library of 100 retakes.

That's a decent run-on sentence.

Apr. 23, 2009 | 7:29 PM liljim responds:

Possibly - however, look up "Jools Holland" on youtube. His show airs in the UK every friday night (when in season). There are tons of artists who show up there and perform live every week... It'd just be nice to see some of those artists making acoustic performances of their stuff.

I'll give you a head start:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN oPNC3ebYQ

(though that movie might eventually be removed from youtube).

Apr. 24, 2009 | 3:03 AM mongoid says:

Wow... that guy is great.

Apr. 24, 2009 | 11:07 AM fluffkomix says:

hey those sessions happened when i was born!

Apr. 24, 2009 | 10:10 PM liljim responds:

If you have ever played Guitar Hero World Tour, then chances are, you will have come across the MTV Unplugged session from Nirvana. Can't remember the name of the track from them that's bundled with that game, though.

Apr. 24, 2009 | 3:39 PM Voodoo says:

Nirvana unplugged was better than their usual stuff, so I would love to see some bands come out with some "Unplugged" CD's in the near future.

There was actually a Korn Unplugged thing about two years ago. I don't know if that will lead to a trend, but it was something.
I didn't even know that STP had one... still, with them back it's good to find some older stuff to listen to while waiting for the new album that may never be.

Apr. 25, 2009 | 2:43 PM liljim responds:

Can't say I regret having missed that particular session, but I was surprised by just how many sessions there were when I looked over the list on wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List _of_artists_featured_on_MTV_Unplu gged

Also... the Stone Temple Pilots session was pretty awesome.

Apr. 26, 2009 | 12:15 AM LtMcMuffin says:

That's a pretty decent list, but I can't say they give the franchise enough credit.
Queens of the Stone Age's was my favorite.

Apr. 26, 2009 | 3:01 PM sucho says:

oh man, i remember that. i also remember how painfully depressing grunge music sounds acoustically. without the grating reverb, the sappiness comes through in great clarity. perhaps why i never liked watching it.

May. 2, 2009 | 8:25 PM Otto007 says:

hi how are you doing?

May. 3, 2009 | 2:14 AM Goonie says:

Eric Clapton is a great artist. Yea, the record industry is falling apart. Damn... I miss the old MTV were it use to be just music videos.

May. 3, 2009 | 6:36 PM Cally says:

Yeah not seen any of that in a good while. I've had the two "Best of..." compilations for a few years.

May. 3, 2009 | 10:02 PM Wrathlust says:

I agree with utter disappointment at how it has all fallen. I miss the old MTV. They had good music come in, but now it simply an old fond memory.

May. 3, 2009 | 10:14 PM jakenator85 says:

yeah, i know what you mean, besides, doesn't MTV stand for "music televison"?

Im disappointed in most things mtv.

May. 6, 2009 | 4:50 AM BobbyJenkins says:

I'm sure there's a DVD of Alice In Chains' unplugged session. I think I have the Nirvana one on recorded VHS somewhere. MY GIRL, MY GIRL DON'T LIIEEEE TO MEEE.

I say fuck yes.

Nirvana unplugged was one of the greatest concerts ever, arguably.

May. 26, 2009 | 7:24 PM BloodyJohn says:

If anyone who is too narrow minded to see that it wasn't just grunge bands who performed at MTV Unpluggled or any other kind of Unplugged go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_
artists_featured_on_MTV_Unplugged

and see that this has been going on for a long time and only stopped/slowed down after the 90's ended.
I do agree with Liljim, I wish either MTV would release the music so we can hear it already nad re-live the experience.

Jun. 7, 2009 | 5:29 AM FreakFlash says:

I've got to say Clapton, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana were my favorite ones. Though all the others were great too. I wouldn't mind seeing The Red Hot Chili Peppers unplugged (although they're broken up now), Staind, or some other of the current bands of today that I can't think of. I don't care for MTV anymore, but that was actually the best program they had, in my opinion.

In the German MTV they actually still do Unpluggeds such as with Die Ärzte, Sportfreunde Stiller, Xavier Naidoo and Söhne Mannheims.
