Nanny States

Posted by liljim Oct. 2, 2008 @ 8:28 PM EDT

Before I even start, I'm going to say that I agree - smoking is a very bad thing.

However, I AM a smoker, and as such, this really irritates me....

The UK Government (and most constituent countries in that Government) have passed a number of laws in the UK over the past few years, all of which I agree with. To clarify as to what's already been done, in no particular order:

1. Upped the age of those eligible to buy cigarettes from 16 to 18.
2. Banned smoking in the working area.
3. Banned smoking in pubs, restaurants, and other public places, which have a roof and so many walls (whether brick, wood, or glass.)
4. Put warning messages on cigarette packages.

What REALLY gets my goat are the plans for the new images on the packages of cigarette packs, which will roll out in 2009, and here's why.....

1. Anyone 18+ in the UK can vote in elections, so they can nominate which party is to be in Government.
2. If they're eligible to vote a Government into power, do they really need to be put through some of this crap (below)?

I know what's going to happen here... The people the Government are trying to target are going to buy a pack of cigarettes, having already bought some sort of container to put the contents of the pack in, and just discard the pack, wherever they are, and then fill their container with the contents of the pack.

New problem... Litter.

The top image is what we already have. Bottom is one of the images that the Government propose to put on packs of cigarettes.

That Looks Diss-Gusting!

Is That a Real Outcome to Smoking? A sort of "growth" development under your throat?

I feel Sorry for Stampler...I hear He puts aways more Coffee and Cigarettes than everyone on the Newgrounds Staff.

Take Care Dude!

BTW...Since Smoking is suppose to help Relief Stress...Mens Health dot Com explains how a deficiency in Vitamin C can increase your stress.

So a good substitute for smoking is to try a cup of Juice, prefeerably something with Vitamin C. Or you can try an Ice Water with a wedge of Lemon.

Personally...to achieve that "Menthol" effect...I just drink Iced Water with "one" drop of "peppermint" oil.

Peppermint has Natural amounts of "Menthol" and it has "NO" cancerous effects.

In Fact...Acording to Wikipeida...Peppermint has plenty of Health Benefits if taken in "small" amounts.

Take Care Dude!

I'm sorry Jim...but I find that awesome. I'm not a smoker myself but that's a really crazy ass idea.

that being said...I really don't think shock photos should be plastered around. Clearly a smoker knows by now (hopefully) that smoking isn't safe for you. They don't need to see pictures from obscure medical journals as proof.

Oct. 2, 2008 | 9:46 PM MaestroRage says:

In Canada we have pictures that try to ward off people too. I think those pictures are purely to scare the youngsters away. I highly doubt the adults aren't aware that smoking is bad for you.

Though nothing, and I mean NOTHING is that brutal here in Canada in regards to pics. Dear lord, I can't look away!

Oct. 2, 2008 | 10:47 PM PolishMatt says:

Here in Canada we already have those brutal pictures on cigarette boxes but they're nothing compared to that! Yes, we do have dissected brain, heavily contaminated lungs, an old guy coughing, and some other stuff but that picture up there is seriously brutal.

I think that they're going to do/continue this to cigarette containers, they should as well gross out and ruin the days of drinkers and heavy junk food because those will kill you as well, hell, maybe they should just put labels on scissors, knifes, guns and anything else that can potential kill you if you really try hard.

But at the same time we would just shooting ourselves in the foot as chances are; those who smoke, most likely drink as well (I). What I'm trying to get at' is that: We already know smoking is bad, they don't need to remind us every so minutes or hours when we decided to take a break, pull out a pack and have a smoke.

And the other (bull shit) rules I'm fine with as I know they will never actually work or be followed. P.S. You're awesome, not sure why but you seem like a pretty chill guy. Just thought I would throw that out there.

Oct. 2, 2008 | 11:13 PM WritersBlock says:

Yeah, they have graphic pictures on packets in Australia already, as well as on TV, but there was a huge blunder that the government made in that the people in the photos weren't smokers, just models wearing gore makeup, so the images lost all their power. I'm not a smoker, and I hate looking at the images, but for smokers, if you're already a smoker, it won't deter you, but yeah, it probably might give youngsters a second guess. I turned 18 about a month ago, and I can tell you that because of all of the negative campaigning, I've not once been tempted to buy the death sticks.

Oct. 3, 2008 | 10:22 PM liljim responds:

Smoking is an addiction and is much akin to waking up in the morning, going to sleep. What you're asking is like me asking you why you go to sleep at night.

Oct. 3, 2008 | 7:35 PM Tystarr says:

I would like to say smoking is a personal issue and the government shouldn't get involved but I can't bring myself to say that since we know smoking is harmful and it kills us slowly. I know people who smoke and I know others who have died of it. Smoking is stupid thing that intelligent people need to stop doing.

Oct. 3, 2008 | 7:35 PM mranarchy says:

Pfft...I think there is a small 'nanny state' problem, but no where near to the level that the Media has decided to blow it up to, smoking is something that affects people around you whether they choose it or not, its not like eating unhealthily or something...
Like it or not the government is only trying to help, theres not really any of this sinister 1984-esque system described in the daily mail etc.

And I'm not so sure about your theory of repackaging, the picture system has already been used to great effect in other countries. Its not like its a test subject....

Oct. 3, 2008 | 10:19 PM liljim responds:

Welcome to the galactically stupid, aka mranarchy.

"smoking is something that affects people around you whether they choose it or not"

REALLY??? I'd have never have known that if you hadn't told me, or if I hadn't have looked at one of the packs of cigarettes I'd bought, or have written what I wrote.

Did you COMPLETELY overlook what I wrote, or do you just do this kind of thing for fun?

Oct. 3, 2008 | 8:33 PM jamboreen says:

Dude everyone knows you smoke to look like that, that spoiling end- game.

Oct. 3, 2008 | 9:42 PM BlueFlameSkulls says:

I don't mind these smoking rules.

What gets me is the people who drink lots of alcohol. The ones who think they're better than smokers. I gave up alcohol a year ago and not had a drop since. I've come to hate drunks. When a drunk is a threat in a pub they should leave. My smoking harms people in enclosed areas, I'll leave the establishment. When a psychopath who has had too many harms people in enclosed areas, the leave the establishment.

Gory images aren't going to stop people smoking. Some but not all. A pack already saying I'll have a permanent limpy didn't stop me.

It all seems a bit patronising. We know the risks of smoking, as we do with drinking and eating poorly. Maybe it could scare off potential young smokers, but for adults and regulars, it's up to them to quit. A nasty image can't break such an addictive habit.

Oct. 6, 2008 | 6:27 AM RageVI says:

Dear God. That last picture...

Just disgusting. Put that on a package of anything and I'll be miles away. No kidding. That tumorous growth is kinda gross, too, but Jesus. That guy needs to shave.

Oct. 6, 2008 | 9:53 AM kidray76 says:

Honestly? Tobacco is just part of human nature. I mean look, the USA was founded on that.
I have no problems with smokers. It is there choice, and pretty much as long as your over 18 and respect my wishes to not be around smoke in smoke free places, I'll respect someone right to smoke around designated smoking areas.

Only thing that irks me, is when professionals who deal with health care smoke. My mother has a dental hyg. that smokes. And every week, she takes a smoke break, then comes back in to clean patients teeth and begings to educate them on the importance of dental care.

That's like a robber telling people not to steal but taking your wallet at the same time.

Oct. 6, 2008 | 9:07 PM liljim responds:

Haha. Yeah, that'd annoy me, too. My teeth are buggered, though, so I don't really care if some hygienist tells me to clean up my act (even if they're telling me to do so when they have their own problems..)

Oct. 6, 2008 | 5:41 PM Cally says:

I guess they're trying the whole shock tactics thing, like they did with seatbelts in cars (who'll ever forget the kid killing his mother by flying into the back of her seat at 40mph?) and speeding ("Hit me at 40, and there's an 80% chance I'll die...")

It's bound to be enough for a good few to want to quit...

Oct. 6, 2008 | 9:15 PM liljim responds:

Oh, come on. That's completely different. New commercials that show you what might happen to your family and friends travelling with you in the event of an accident are different to old ones which tell the same story:

i.e. if you smoke, you're going to die younger than you might have otherwise.

And even that message is different to what you'll see on most packs at the moment. "Smokers die younger", "Stopping smoking reduces the risk of fatal heart and lung diseases", "Smoking seriously harms you and others around you."

As for the kid that gets knocked down in that ad - I'd be tempted to speed up and see what happens (other than a jail sentence.)

Well there's a new Smoker's Lounge in the C&C.
http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/9 77217

We have similar warnings in Canada, mainly dirty brown teeth that says "Smoking causes mouth disease" or a couple of kids with brackets "You're hurting us too".

Kind of pointless too now that store owners aren't even allowed to advertise on power walls or humidors. It's a real pain when I'm out of town looking for a new pouch of tobacco to try out. There's a smoke shop in my town that boarded the windows and doesn't let minors in, that way the customer can browse around and check the stock.

Those are the reasons why I find smoking useless and dangerous, also you waste a lot of money in it.

Oct. 14, 2008 | 10:32 AM HaniiPuppy says:

I'd agree with them changing the message - the message isn't even that much of a change - but you shouldn't have such grotesque images on a public product - especially when it's every product that falls under a particular category. This makes it seem as though the UK government is copying the internet, by manipulating people to do (or not-do) something by grossing them out, as opposed to actually giving them the facts.

They shouldn't put nasty pictures on the packs. Not all people smoke a lot. Its like putting pictures of fat chicks on butter and hamburgers.

Oh come on! How many people do you know even have that thing under his chin? I never seen one person in my life have that. I'm pretty sure people who smoke WAY to much get that.

The second image is stupid and disgusting. Neither of these would stop an 18 year old from purchasing cigaretes if he went to a store with the explicet purpose of purchasing cigaretes. It is hypocritcal for a smoker to support stricter smoking laws.
