Frigging iPods

Posted by liljim Aug. 24, 2008 @ 12:20 AM EDT

I have a HUGE collection of CDs. I started collecting them as a student and used to frequent a store that sold albums for around $2 USD a piece, way back when.

I recently replaced a Creative Zen mp3 player, with an iPod. The Zen was great, since I was able to transfer files to and from it. However, I felt it was time to upgrade - the Zen was a bit of a brick....

So, I got another mp3 player (an iPod), thinking I'd be able to copy all of the music I have to that device, and then back again, should the iPod start to give up its life (as I'd done with the Zen). My music collection is worth FAR more than the iPod (both in price and in sentimental value).

And yet, I can't convert anything. Anyone else have any similar experiences?

That really is a shame about the Zen. I have a Vision:M, and compared to ipods today, it is such a brick. That would be the only reason I would even consider getting an ipod, for its size. But, this zen I have is doing just fine, so long as I don't have to carry it around!

There's tons of tutorials on the internet on how to reveal hidden files, bypass certain iTunes rules, and changing the region of you device. You may want to do some research.

Aug. 24, 2008 | 1:54 AM BiffTheTimid says:

There are plug-ins you can download for the program win-amp that easily allow you to transfer music from your iPod to your computer. Also, there is a program called "YamiPod" that is a stand-alone program that does the same thing.

I'd say your safest bet to preserve your music collection however, is to go out and get a 500gig to a terabyte external hard-drive (depending on how large your collection is) and back everything up to that. I know for me, I never remove music from my computer - only my iPod to free up space. So even if the iPod dies, my computer will still be around. But if my computer shits the bed, then I'd be in trouble.

Also, from what I hear, apple is releasing new models of all their iPods in the next couple of weeks, with a serious price drop to keep them in competition with their much cheaper iPhone. So you might want to see what you can get in terms of a rebate.

Aug. 24, 2008 | 5:47 AM liljim responds:

Thanks ever so much for that. I had a look through google last night, but tiredness and blind fury seemed to have prevented me from finding anything like that program.

I was looking through amazon the other day and found a terrabyte's worth of HDD for $200 - I think if I wait a little while, the price will probably come down some. Either that, or I'll just get something smaller (my collection is at around 50Gb at the moment, I think.)

There's little-to-no chance that I'll get a rebate on this thing, the warranty on it expired a long time ago now, and I'm reasonably happy with the unit itself... The only thing I wasn't amused with was the inability to get my tracks back into mp3 format, which is now solved.

Thanks again.

Do you mean send files from the iPod to the computer and back? In the settings of your iPod, check Manage My iPod Manually or something like that.

Aug. 25, 2008 | 7:51 PM liljim responds:

Given that my music collection exceeds the filesize of my laptop, which is what I use to transfer music I've bought over... That doesn't really help. The iPod I have has a bigger hard drive than my laptop. Thanks anyway.

Aug. 24, 2008 | 11:00 PM hypeserver says:

There is software you can use to move music from an ipod to your computer. I'm not really sure if that's the problem you're talking about though. I'd be happy to help you out though if I knew a little more about the problem.

I already found a program that's helped me out, thanks to Biff.

I just ot another ipod from costco because my first one dropped out of my broken jacket pocket. and now, with soch a shitty computer like mine, it's going to take about another week just to get the ipod songs I bought back on my new ipod. thing is, I have about 10x the amount of non-itunes songs on my computer that I can't for the life of me put on the ipod. however, if you import them into itunes, apparently it works, but my comp. is so old, that is a load of bullshit. anywho, if that don't work, look up some stuff online

Aug. 25, 2008 | 6:57 PM fireball01e says:

I had an ipod, which stored all my music (18GB of it!). My music collection was stored on my laptop. then on christmas 2005, it decided it was time to pass on, leaving me with no music. I brought a new PC and managed to back-up all my pictures and movies from disk to my new machine, but was wondering how to transfer music from my ipod to the computer. So i called Apple, "you can not transfer music from the ipod to your computer, but you can format it and put music on it". I couldnt get to grip with the fact that i had lost all my music, so i searched high and low, intill my bro told me about a bit of software called "igadget". I then loaded it onto my PC and Boom all my music was transfered back to my PC, for me to enjoy, while playing C.O.D and S.O.F.

Aug. 25, 2008 | 7:11 PM fireball01e says:

Ohhh!!! Converting the files. Zen runs on MP3, so itunes should pick them up and convert them to ACC. but occasionally they dont, this is because of apples copy protection system. one of the ways to convert them is to stick them on CD and then download them into iTunes. the other way of doing this is to convert individual tracks using audiology or other simillar software which will convert them. remember itunes is only compatible with MP4, ACC, M4A, ACA, WAV and some types of High Res-MP3. iPod on the other hand is only compatible with ACC, MP4 and M4A, most formats will convert with iTunes but if you have any files which are or have been in any type off association with window media player, they simply will not convert and not play back. my advise.......you are barmy if you have brought an iPod and have falled into a hole, which apple has created. this hole is extremerly hard to get out of. I sold my iPod 2 years ago and am trying to still convert music back to MP3. TURN BACK NOW SKYWALKER, LORD IPOD WILL OBSORB YOU LIKE A BLUE LIQUID WITH A SHEET OF BOUNTY APPLIED TO IT!

I had an ipod and was having lots of problems with it, eventually the thing got corrupted. It turns out that it's more expensive to fix the hardrive than it is to buy a new one.

After that I got a Zune... and wow... the differences were amazing. A 2 year old retarded kid with no arms could upload music to a Zune. The iPod can be a little tricky. The zune software is way better than iTunes IMO.

Biff is your hero xP

Aug. 26, 2008 | 3:55 PM FlashCreations says:

Just a tip: I believe you have to download iTunes and then drag your music on your Zune from iTunes to your ipod (By right clicking and clicking something like Move to iPod). It's something with the strange structure that iPods store music in (And they probably did it to get Windows Users to download iTunes!!!). When it comes to me, I usually don't have a problem with hardware, it's usually the software (actually it's my code!!!). But no, I've never had a problem with my mp3 player, but then again, it's not an Apple.

Aug. 29, 2008 | 4:20 AM liljim responds:

How does that help in actually converting the files over to MP3 format? I'm not an idiot, I know how to sync my iPod to my PC (and vice versa). That is not the issue (which, has since been resolved, thanks to another user above).

Aug. 26, 2008 | 9:27 PM Atgod88 says:

My major frustration with iPod and its varients are the fact that you cannot have an iPod that wont be outdated for more then a year. My first and only iPod is the original iPod nano, 4 gigs, was like 350 at the time, and it has a solid metal back which is said to be stainless steel, but mine disagrees, it has a giant technicolor blob on the back that is sunken in with the multiples of scratches from it being moved from my pocket to my computer. I bought a case for it but having it for about 5 weeks before the case was already to late for it to be worth it.

Back to my original point, after all these frustrations and problems, 3 months later the new nano comes, it comes in a variety of colors, is all plastic so no stains, has an 8gig, even though I only keep maybe 100 pieces on it at one time so the 2 gig would have sufficed, and it was probably 100 dollars cheaper. Now they even have video nano's, that are smaller, cheaper, better, higher gigs, zero transfat blah blah blah.

I don't know if you use iTunes often or what not but they have the annoying habit of making purchased songs into a format that cannot be replayed using any other programs other then iTunes.

There is probably a better way to convert them but I use a program that records what comes from my speakers into mp3 so I can use my music for movies, flash, everything else.

Sorry, that was more of a rant then a help, I guess just google converters, thats how I get my programs for the most part.

I got an iPod Nano. It has tons of space, and around $200 it's worth it. I use "LimeWire" to get most of my music. With "LimeWire" you can decide which format you want to download. And since LimeWire is free its hard to say no.

How could you downgrade to an ipod im on my 3rd Zen now, and there amazing bits of kit,

In fact last week i purchased the new X-fi, and its even sexier then the ipod so now i dont see a reason for them to even exisit.

(the only reason i swapped my vision M is becuase i stepped on it and smashed the screen)

So anyway my solution take the ipoo back to the shop and get the X-fi, the future is wirless music transfer!

Aug. 31, 2008 | 4:54 AM Countevil says:

I myself have a Zen and have found it hugely reliable. Sure it's not as thin and it only has a monocrome display, but it works great. Like you said transfering music is no hassle at all.
I'm probubly going to be getting an I-pod eventually as I'm hoping to get a macbook. I have heard that music is harder to deal with on I-pod because it has to be in specific I-pod format. I think you just import it all into I-tunes and it should do it all for you.

Aug. 31, 2008 | 1:10 PM Murad136 says:

Protip: Never buy music from the iTunes store. it takes a fucking century to find an appropriate program to convert the idiotic format. But, since you have an iPod, you'll be find. It was shite for me because I had a 100 dollar giftcard to spend and wasn't about to make it got to waste. Ofcourse, my MP3 player is also my CD player, and man is it ever loyal.

There shouldn't be a problem... If you have the .mp3s on your computer, you could import them or if you've still got the CDs, put them in your disk drive and wait for iTunes to ask if you want to import the music, then drag the music from the library to the picture of your iPod in the bar on the left side of the screen. That's what I always do and I don't find any problems except the fact that the converter in iTunes takes forever to get music off CDs...

Sep. 7, 2008 | 7:21 AM SerBANNED says:

copying/moving files from your ipod is PISS EASY it requires EXTREME logic
so you know the ipod has your music on it. you insert it into your USB, go to the ipod's stuff, and notice nothing. just go to accesibility options or something from the control panel and check the box that says ''show hidden files''. you'll see the files in F01 F02 etc folders somewhere in the usb folder
then tada! you have your music, but the filenames are gibberish: GJFKGJ.mp3 etc etc, but the info is still stored in them so most (i repeat, most) have their name properly
