USB, SshmooSB

Posted by liljim Jul. 16, 2008 @ 11:39 PM EDT

I can't be the only person on the planet who's as pissed off as I am with USB devices (or, more specifically cables.)

I have a PS3, with a USB cable. I have a flash drive, with a USB cable. I have a camera, with a cable. I have a cell phone, with a cable. - All of which, could work from the same cable.

I have another camera, with a totally different cable. What the...

My lounge looks like there's black spaghetti all over the place. Fucking cables.

What I'm really annoyed about, though, is the connection to the devices... That's usually pretty much the same for EVERYTHING USB related I have, but not the newer camera. I have to have a DIFFERENT USB cable for all of that.

Of course, with my luck, I lost that cable. I'll be damned if I'm going to pay Fuji for another cable (which I'm sure is their ploy), so I ordered a card reader.

I'd take pictures, but there'd be some irony in all of that. Given that I can't get pictures transferred to the PC.

I hate them almost as much as you do. I have about 4 different ones. And 1 of them is also different than the others. So, why can't you get pictures on your PC? Which cable did you lose? The one that goes to the camera with the different USB cord?

Jul. 17, 2008 | 2:17 AM liljim responds:

I lost the camera cable. The one that's different from all of the others that I already have.

What's more annoying is the fact that the camera isn't bigger than the cables I already have, which is the only reason I can think of that would necessitate the reason for having smaller male plugs on the cables.

Jul. 17, 2008 | 12:05 AM Wurmy1029 says:

There are only two USB cables, A and B... unless you count USB 1.1(?) and USB 2.0.. and there are two more USB types.. uh.. yeah I guess there are alot.

But at least it's a standard. I would much rather have this than a bunch of proprietary cables that each require their own port/connector etc...

Jul. 17, 2008 | 2:21 AM liljim responds:

Clearly, you don't own many USB-based products. Or you would be in the same position that I'm in now. I'll take a picture of the different sockets once the card reader comes through and then you'll see what I mean.

Jul. 17, 2008 | 1:06 AM mranarchy says:

Aren't there converters or something?

Jul. 17, 2008 | 2:23 AM liljim responds:

Yeah - I ordered a card reader, so that I don't have to worry about cables any more. Just take the memory card out of the computer and stick it straight on the PC. And it deals with a range of different card sizes, so all should be good. :)

Jul. 17, 2008 | 1:19 AM spite-skater says:

Yeah I know what you mean.
I don't know what the deal is.

Jul. 17, 2008 | 2:19 AM tomato-soup says:

Yeah, that gets annoying sometimes. I'm sure there's a cheap, generic cable for your camera that you can buy.

Jul. 17, 2008 | 2:25 AM liljim responds:

My point is that I shouldn't have to. I already have 7 USB cables on the floor. Why on earth should I need to get another one, with a slightly different input plug, when I already have all of those to fall back on?

Jul. 17, 2008 | 3:25 AM WolfBlitz2 says:

get a sony instead
cybershots are pretty good
and the newer one are even better
good quality
i bet $50 the card reader has a cable to that too!

I hate wires too.

But in special cases for broadband for example, it's easier to have a long wired connection, rather than set up an annoying wireless connection.

And are you coming to the NG meetup in Augustus?

Jul. 17, 2008 | 12:25 PM UMREE says:

y do you need 800 different cameras?

Jul. 17, 2008 | 12:47 PM BlueHippo says:

This sounds like a very similar rant my father had one day. Do we really need 600 different kinds of USB cables? Yes, my device oh so badly needs it's own obscure connector, fuck making shit convenient.

Jul. 17, 2008 | 1:32 PM Wurmy1029 says:

Wait.. are you saying that USB has too many connector types, or that you have too many cables?

Jul. 17, 2008 | 7:50 PM liljim responds:

Both. If there was a standard connection to devices as well as the standard connection to a USB port, then I could get by with maybe two cables in total, rather than however many I've got at the moment.

Jul. 17, 2008 | 6:32 PM Sir-Nuts says:

I've had problem with the USB on my computer, not with the cables.

Here's what happened last year: I wanted to pass a few songs to my iPod. Cool... if it wasn't on my father's account with the fresh installed iTunes. I was begging to have a problem.

I had this habit of just connecting the iPod to the computer and then iTunes would show up. But something odd happened: iTunes was never used in that account, so all the songs had to be imported to it. Fine... not really. Somehow my iPod didn't "like" that attitude.

I decided to remove it, to put the iPod into the account I used it regularly. I removed it the way it should be done, but the moment I removed the cable, a message appeared on the screen. I didn't look at it and removed the iPod anyway.

Turns out the next time I tried to connect my iPod the computer didn't identify it anymore. Other things, such as my camera, still work, but my iPod doesn't.

Oh well, computers. Who knows what they can do.

Jul. 17, 2008 | 11:06 PM Labusch says:

they should make only 1 USB Drive that is compatable with all of your aquipment now if you have a Acer Q600 Intel Core 2Quad Processor it lets you put camera Cards in them The top has like 4 USB Plugs and the inside by this door you open has like 4 Card Readers and 1 little USB Plug for some sorta tiny plug

If You like I could Send You A Picture Of It Its A Pretty Good Computer But It costed me Like 11 Thousand But It was Worth It :D

Jul. 18, 2008 | 12:48 AM liljim responds:

I'd rather you didn't. You scare me enough as it is.

Jul. 17, 2008 | 11:25 PM Malachy says:

my phone has some strange ass connection port.

it has an "adapter" it came with and on the adapter is a headphone picture (which doesn't actually fit my hands free device) and a USB picture...which doesnt fit any USB cord known to man.

You'd think it'd come with it if it goes on about keeping all your phone's shiz on the computer, but no I have to go find it and pay them money for it after the fact.

Jul. 18, 2008 | 12:48 AM liljim responds:

I feel like one, too. Back in a few minutes.

Jul. 18, 2008 | 1:41 AM Anim8or666 says:

I feel your pain, man. At school in my digital photography class, there are around 10 different camera brands being used. Each brand has it's own little cable. Eventually, it got the point of where none of the cables match the cameras, and most of the memory cards are non-standard. So now, I'm stuck with several high-end cameras that can't be used at all. And don't even get me started on the power cables. There really ought to be a movement to make all cables standardised.

Jul. 20, 2008 | 9:04 PM liljim responds:

Yeah, that's another thing that bugs me. You get your camera (the older one I have is powered on AA batteries, the newer one has a removable battery that you can charge with a convenient charger that comes with it.)

BUT... Wouldn't it be more practical for these guys to just give you a power plug that you can slot into your camera and power it from that? I mean, how hard could that be?

The old camera I have (Finepix S5000, I think), has an adapter that lets you do just that. But you have to pay for it. AWESOME.

There can't be a great deal of profit margin in cables and power cables... So why don't these companies just make their money out of those stupid people who're prepared to pay through the nose for "official" memory cards, juxtaposed to those who'll pay quarter of that for the same sort of card, from a third party company?

Jul. 18, 2008 | 2:46 AM Wiiporter says:

I like generic cables, I can throw half of them away. The special cables, I keep track of.

Jul. 18, 2008 | 11:37 AM Rucklo says:

oh yeah, i think pretty much everyone have been experiencing this... western-wrold problem? :D
still, it only gets worse when you buy something from country where the connections are different - you english have a different connection than what i belive is standard european (two round plugs), and the US have two flat things... I bought a small sampler/recorder-device when i was in the US, and i have to have an adapter to be able to charge it.
gotta go get one...

(but it's actually worth it, since i saved 100USD by not buying it in sweden. hurr hurr)

still: standards ftw!

Jul. 20, 2008 | 9:20 PM liljim responds:

Yeah, I know what you mean. However, don't tar this whole "country" (yes, I'm being pedantic and sarcastic in one foul swoop) with the "standards" we have over here.

You'll get the people who don't believe in England being a country and those who think that England *is* the UK chiming in.

Anyway, couldn't agree more. We have a weird three prong plug here and different voltage when it comes to power outlets. 240 Volts vs. 110/120/130? And different plugs to power that stuff.

It's frustrating when you go abroad from here with different electrical items, but given that one of my most used possessions at the moment is an iPod, I bought a nifty little plug converter, which should see me through going to any country.

And yeah, the poor US dollar value is good for us guys. For now. :)

*edit* - when paying for stuff in dollars. It's not so good when the dollar is converted back to local currency.

As for the rest of it all... Dunno.

Yeah I get what you're talking about. I have a PS3 which came with a Mini B USB cable to charge the controllers amongst other uses such as connecting a PSP.

But they have the nerve not to include a cable in a new controller pack. I'll be fucked if I lose the only one I have. Considering there's a lot of different USB cables out there it'll take a while trying to pick the right one. I know I've been to an electronics store with selves of different cables I don't know which are which.

At least I know it's called a Mini B, chances are I'll spend half an hour looking for all that rather than buying one USB then finding out it doesn't fit.

Jul. 19, 2008 | 9:39 PM TjA says:

its because hardware companies wont stick to a general spec. they want their own "unique" type so you have t go through them to get a inevitable replacement. at leasts its better than those huge plugs.

I know what you mean. I had to get a USB splitter with 4 extra ports just to hook everything up! On top of that the splitter has to be hooked up to a USB port so that takes away one of my slots!I have a wireless keyboard/mouse combo (which uses a UBS cable), a USB headset, a USB flash drive, and a USB cable for my PSP/Cell phone. It's pure USB madness I tell ya! MADNESS!

I am a memory stick fan. The only USB I use is A, B, and The square one. Maybe AOSS will eliminate USB cables.

Jul. 28, 2008 | 2:52 AM Sterance says:

USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. I was amazed to learn in an intro circuits class that the usb cable only has 4 lines: data, sync, power and ground. Knowing this, my friends and i spliced various cords together to make new combinations of different shapes of ends. This was hit and miss.

My point is that you theoretically could make the USB actually universal with some creative splicing and a logic probe or voltmeter.

Aug. 4, 2008 | 12:41 PM tekcos says:

Oh come on, it's not really that bad. Let me explain;

You have a type a connector, a type b connected, a mini type a connector, and a mini type b connector, so some cables are type a to type b, or type a to type a, or type a to type mini b, or type a to type mini a, or type b to type b, or type b to type mini b.
